DEFINING PHILIPPINE LIBRARIANSHIP

Abstract

The paper argues that the definition of Philippine librarians and Philippine librarianship is artificial if these are based solely on Republic Act 9246 and other similar legislative literature. It attempts to naturally define these concepts using the method of division by comparing and differentiating it with similar concepts. It also explores the differences in the meaning of Philippine Librarianship if the silent prepositions in or of are pronounced.

Kathleen Lourdes B. Obille, School of Library and Information Studies University of the Philippines
Ms. Obille is the current dean of the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies. She finished her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy degree at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy and her Master of Library and Information Science degree at the School of Library and Information Studies, both in the University of the Philippines.
Iyra S. Buenrostro, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information Nanyang Technological University Singapore
Ms. Buenrostro obtained both her Bachelor of Library and Information Science (cum laude) and Master of Library and Information Science (with specialization in Archival Studies) from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2005 and 2010, respectively. She is a full time faculty member at the School of Library and Information Studies, University of the Philippines Diliman since 2006 and has taught courses on LIS and Archival Studies. At present, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in Information Studies at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore where she is a recipient of NTU Research Scholarship.
