HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF PREDICTION MODELS OF TIME-TO-INITIATE-CORROSION IN REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES IN MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

This paper presents the history and development of mathematical models for the prediction of time to initiate corrosion of reinforced concrete exposed to chlorides in marine environment. Emphasis is given to prediction models (empirical and mathematical) that consider Fick’s 2nd law of diffusion as the theoretical basis. Since repair and rehabilitation of corroded reinforced concrete marine structures draw significant portion of the budget for infrastructures, thecapability to accurately predict deterioration levels due to chloride attack, especially the time-toinitiate corrosion, in reinforced concrete structures exposed to chloride-induced corrosion can translate to major economic savings and possible extension of service life of a member or astructure.
