Ang Boy Love Series Bilang Diskurso: Isang Komparatibong Analisis ng 2GETHER THE SERIES ng Thailand at HELLO STRANGER ng Pilipinas
Abstract
Napag-uusapan na ang tinatawag na Boy Love (BL) Series sa mundo ng digital entertainment o aliwang dihital sa Pilipinas pati na rin sa buong mundo. Nagsimula sa bansang Thailand ang ganitong serye na minsan ding tinatawag na Y series (yaoi) dulot na rin ng impluwensiya ng mangá ng mga Hapon at ng Korean Hallyu sa South Korea. Nang iere nito ang isa sa mga BL series nito na 2gether ng GMMTV, kumalat ito na tila apoy sa larangan ng pandaigdigang pantelebisyon. Isa ang Pilipinas sa sumunod sa ganitong kalakaran. Marami nang naprodus ang Pilipinas na mga BL series at isa sa mga ito ang Hello Stranger ng Black Sheep. Tumutukoy ang pag-aaral na ito sa komparatibong analisis ng 2gether at Hello Stranger upang mapagtibay ang pag-usbong ng BL at ang kabuluhan nito sa pagtanggap sa kasarian at sexual na oryentasyon sa lipunan. Babagtasin din dito ang posisyon ng BL sa industriya ng aliwan sa pamamagitan ng pagpapahayag ng dalawang lalaki, kapuwa may hitsura, kumikilos bilang mga tunay na lalaki na nahuhulog ang damdamin sa isa’t isa upang magmahalan. Anim na salik ang inilista upang maipaliwanag ang impluwensiya at impak ng mga BL series. Sa pamamagitan ng paghahambing, mabibigyan ng pakahulugan ang BL iba sa mga nakagawiang diskursong pambakla. Marami nang naisagawang pag-aaral tungkol sa mga usaping bakla subalit ang ipinagkaiba ng BL sa mga ito, nabuo ito sa perspektiba ng mga babae at para sa mga tagapagtangkilik na mga babae rin subalit nasasaklaw na rin nito ang lahat ng mga kasarian dahil sa taglay nitong impak at bagong perspektibo. Iba’t ibang salik, pagkakatulad at pagkakaiba ang tatalakayin upang makita ang kinalalagyan ng BL bilang diskurso ng pagsusuri, kritisismo o interpretasyon. Maaaring maging paraan ang pag[1]aaral nito sa pagtanggap ng kultura ng kasarian, bakla man, o pagiging isang lalaki (sa usaping heterosexual o homosexual man) bilang isang bagong lapit.
The genre referred to as the Boy Love (BL) Series is currently a hot topic of discussion in the Philippine digital world and in other countries as well. This genre, also referred to as Y (yaoi) series, emerged from Thailand owing to influences from Japanese mangá and the Korean Hallyu of South Korea. Following the broadcast of one of its main BL series, 2gether in GMMTV last February 2020, BL spread like wildfire in the global television arena. The Philippines soon followed suit in the production of an array of BL series following this craze, including Black Sheep’s Hello Stranger. This study focuses on the comparative analysis of the two BL series, 2gether and Hello Stranger, to establish the emergence of BL and its current significance in gender and sexual orientation and appreciation in Philippine society. It will also situate BL within the entertainment industry as an alternative means of catharsis of two good-looking straight-acting men falling in love with each other. Six factors have been identified to explain the influence and impact of these BL series. The comparative analysis will also manifest the BL brand or trademark that distinguishes it from the more common and customary gay discourses. Various studies and critiques have been conducted on gay discourses, and what sets BL apart is that while the genre was created and conceptualized from women’s perspectives and intended to cater to female audiences, it ended up encompassing all genders due to the impact of its progressive perspective. Various factors, similarities and differences are discussed to locate BL series as a discourse for analysis, criticism, or interpretation. The study could serve as a bridge towards accepting gender, queer, or masculinity (heterosexually and homosexually speaking) culture as a new approach.
