Ang Pulis at Pushang sa Ilalim ng Tulay: Komparatibong Pagbasa sa Dalawang Popular na Awit

Kinukumpara sa akda ang dalawang bersiyon ng novelty song na “May Pulis sa Ilalim ng Tulay” mula sa unang bersiyon nito na inawit ng grupong D'Big 3 Sullivans noong dekada ‘70 tungo sa ikalawang bersiyon nito na inawit ng People's Chorale noong Martial Law commemoration 2018 sa Luneta Park. Ang parehong awit ay binasa batay sa tatlong bahagi: ang tunog, ang lyrics at kahulugan, at ang ideolohiya. Mula dito, natagpuan na ang unang bersiyon ay nagpapatuloy sa mahabang tradisyon ng mga popular na awit ng protesta noong dekada ‘70 na lumalaban sa isang pigura ng awtoridad samantala, ang ikalawang bersiyon ay may potensiyal na makapag-udyok sa tagapakinig na lumikha ng aksiyon at magsulong ng pagbabagong panlipunan. Tinutukoy din dito ang potensiyal ng mga popular na awitin na maging makabayan sa proseso ng transmogrifikasyon at/o adaptasyon.

Abstract

This study compares two versions of the novelty song “May Pulis sa Ilalim ng Tulay” (“There's a Policeman Under the Bridge”) from its first version which have been sung by D'Big 3 Sullivans, a novelty song group popular from the 1970s, to its second version sung by the People's Chorale last Martial Law commemoration 2018 at Luneta Park. Both songs were approached through three parts: the music/sound, the lyrics and its meaning, and the ideologies found in the text. From here, the first song revealed that it harks back to the long tradition of resistance to corrupt authorities from the popular songs of 1970s while the second version revealed potential in arousing the listener to move and advance social transformation. The study also deals with the potential of popular music to be nationalist in the process of transmogrification and/or adaptation.
